How the 10-point to 4-point conversion works
The common proportional method treats 10.0 as 4.0 and scales every score below it at the same rate. An 8.0 CGPA becomes 3.20, 7.5 becomes 3.00, and 9.0 becomes 3.60. This is simple enough for planning and shortlisting, but it is not an official credential evaluation.
The method is most useful when an application asks for an approximate US GPA or when you want to compare your record with published 4.0-scale ranges. If the application says not to convert your grades, report the original CGPA exactly as it appears on the transcript.

Why an official result may differ
Indian universities do not all grade the same way. Relative grading, strict departments, minimum passing marks, and the distribution of class results can change how an evaluator reads the same numerical CGPA. Reading a converted GPA in context
A converted 4.0 GPA is one line in a larger academic record. Admissions readers can also see the subjects you studied, the level of those courses, failed or repeated attempts, and whether your grades improved over time. An applicant with a slightly lower converted GPA but excellent grades in advanced major courses may be stronger than the summary number suggests.
When comparing your result with a university's published average, treat the average as context rather than a guarantee or cutoff. Published numbers may describe domestic students, while international transcripts are reviewed on their original scale. Keep your original 10-point CGPA visible on application documents and label any 4.0 conversion as an estimate unless the receiving institution produced it.
