CGPA to German Grade Calculator

Estimate your German grade using the modified Bavarian formula. On the German scale, lower grades are better.

German gradeEnter a value above.
Formula: German grade = 1 + 3 x ((10 - CGPA) / (10 - 4))

How the German conversion works

The modified Bavarian formula uses the highest possible grade, your achieved grade, and the minimum passing grade. This calculator assumes an Indian maximum of 10 and a minimum passing CGPA of 4. A 10.0 converts to 1.0, an 8.0 converts to 2.0, and a 7.0 converts to 2.5.

What is a good German grade?

German grades run in the opposite direction from many international scales. A grade near 1.0 is excellent, 2.0 is good, and 4.0 is generally the passing limit. Programs may set eligibility thresholds such as 2.5 or 2.0, but the exact requirement varies by university and course.

Check the minimum passing grade

The formula is sensitive to the minimum passing grade. If your institution uses 5 instead of 4, the result changes. Use the grading legend on your transcript and the conversion instructions supplied by the German university or Uni-Assist.

If you are also applying in the United States, use the CGPA to GPA calculator. Do not reuse the German result as a US GPA because the scales have different directions and formulas.

German applications and Uni-Assist

Many German universities publish course-specific requirements and may use Uni-Assist to review international documents. The converted grade can affect basic eligibility, but programs may also require particular credits in mathematics, computing, engineering, or another subject. Meeting the grade threshold does not replace those curriculum requirements.

Keep the grading-scale page from your university transcript available. It should show the maximum possible grade and minimum passing grade used in the formula. If those values differ from 10 and 4, calculate again with the values requested by the German institution. A small change in the minimum passing grade can noticeably change the final German result.

Use the right conversion for your application

These conversions are planning estimates. Universities and credential evaluators may use the grading scale printed on your transcript, class rank, course rigor, or an institution-specific method. Start with the CGPA to GPA calculator, then check the exact instructions from the university or evaluation service receiving your documents.
